Pairing + Setting Up Tracker in SteamVR

First, if you haven’t already, you’ll need to pair your trackers with SteamVR and assign them the correct Tracker Roles

See SteamVR’s guide to pairing a Vive Tracker 3.0:

Or a guide for pairing the older model Vive Tracker:

Once the trackers are paired, ensure you have assigned 1 tracker as Left Foot, another 1 as Right Foot and the final tracker as Waist.

This can be done with SteamVR via Settings > Controllers > Manage Trackers and then adjust the Tracker Role dropdown for each of the trackers.

Tracker Placement:

The foot trackers can be placed either on the feet or on the ankles via straps, depending on your preference or the type of motion you are attempting to capture. Placing the tracker on the foot can provide additional motion data, such as the rotation of the foot – allowing the embodied character to point its toes for example. Placing the tracker on the ankle can be more comfortable for performing higher energy motions such as jumping or running.

The waist tracker should be placed around the waist/hips, again via a strap. It can be placed either at the front or the back, depending on your preference or the type of animation you are attempting to capture. Typically, placing the tracker on the lower back is advantageous as it keeps the tracker closer to the user’s pelvis and is less likely to collide with the upper legs etc. during high energy performances.

For all trackers, it is important to ensure they are fixed securely as any wobbling of the trackers will carry through to the animated performance.
