# Capture

In Animotive, you can capture a performance before or after spawning a Camera.&#x20;

**To begin Capture,** **hold down the Y button** on your left hand. A 3 second count-in will appear, after which you can start your performance. **To end the capture, just tap the Y button** and release it.&#x20;

You can also start a Capture through the Timeline Panel. **Point your laser at the** [**Panels Menu**](/animotive-documentation/learning-animotive/menus.md), and **select it by pressing the right trigger.** Now, **point your laser at the Timeline button,** and **select it by pressing the right trigger.**&#x20;

**Click the red record symbol** to start a Capture. Simply **click the symbol again to stop** the Capture.\
\
In Animotive, you have the freedom to set up cameras and/or lights before or after a character performance. \
If you choose to capture a raw performance first, only the movements of characters and props you may be grabbing will be recorded when you hit capture. \
If you set up cameras and lights *before* performance, not only the scene as seen through the cameras will be recorded as well as the performances themselves but also lighting conditions and potential camera movements once you start capturing. \
We strongly advise to set up cameras and lights *before* capturing and assess the performance through the monitors. You will, in any case, always have the option to endlessly modify your cameras and lights' positions and settings at a later stage. <br>
